The moment Madam Rivers left, Helen couldn't hold back any longer. Her voice dripped with sarcasm. “You're
just a clueless country girl. You don’t know a thing about high society. Don’t embarrass us at the banquet-just let
Sammy go in your place.”
Sloane looked up, her eyes gleaming with quiet sharpness. “That spot was given toby Grandma. If you've
got a problem with that, maybe go talk to her?”
Helen's face flushed crimson. She opened her mouth, but no words cout.
Surprisingly, Marshall didn’t side with her. “If Madam Rivers gave you the invitation, then you should go.”
“Darling—" Helen tried again, but Adrian reached over and gently tugged at her sleeve, shaking his head. “Mom,
it’s a decision from the main house. We can’t change it.”

He wasn’t too concerned-after all, for the past few years, the main house had always reserved one of the
Houston family’s banquet invitations for him.
Meanwhile, back at the Rivers main estate, Madam Rivers was settling things of her own. “Since Sloane’s going
this year, Adrian’s invitation will go to Jayden.”
Jordan, head of the main family, was happy to agree, though he raised a concern. “Mother, Adrian's now a
partner at his law firm. He has wide connections and has even worked with the Houston family before. He's gone
every year. If we suddenly hand his spot to Jayden, won't that cause resentment?”
Madam Rivers, seated calmly at the head of the room, lifted her teacup and took a sip before speaking. “That's
exactly what | want. Let him resent it. Let all of them resent Sloane for taking his place. The more bitter they are,
the less chance there is for reconciliation.”
Jordan's eyes lit up. “Mother, you're brilliant.”
“This way, Sloane will have no choice but to side with us,” she added, though her brows furrowed slightly. “What
| still don’t understand is why the Houston family specifically asked for Sloane this year. She must be hiding
something we haven't uncovered.”
Madam Rivers set her teacup down, expression composed. “Doesn't matter. As long as we keep her tightly in our
grasp, whatever she’s capable of will be ours to use.”
The next morning, someone from the main house cpersonally to deliver Sloane's

The head butler, Xavier, arrived at the Rivers household carrying an ornate brocade box. Inside was a single,
gold-embossed invitation.
He smiled and respectfully presented the box to Sloane.
Just then, footsteps crushing down the stairs-Adrian.
He greeted the butler with practiced politeness. “Thanks for making the trip, Xavier.”
Xavier nodded politely. “Just doing my duty.”
Adrian’s smile twitched as he waited. But when Xavier didn’t hand him anything, he finally asked, “Xavier,
where’s my invitation?”
“Oh,” Xavier said, gesturing toward Sloane, “The family head only gaveone. That one’s for Ms. Rivers.”
Which meant Adrian wasn’t invited this year.
His smile dropped instantly, replaced by shock. “What do you mean? I've gone every year. Why is this year
different?” His voice rose, unable to mask his anger.
Xavier's expression remained stiff and formal. “Those are the family’s arrangements. I'm just following orders.”
Adrian clenched his jaw, furious but helpless. What could he do-storm into the main house and demand an
answer?
After a deep breath, he forced his voice into something steadier. “Then... who's going this year from the main
family?”
“Mr. Jayden, Miss Natalie... and Miss Sloane,” Xavier answered without hesitation.
