Chapter 138
Eloise was as pale as a ghost.
Harvey tried to touch her face. But Eloise instinctively stepped back. Finally, he dropped his hand, "You've just
had surgery. Lettake care of you."
Eloise listened in silence. She stared at him blankly, "Attorney Horigan, do | have to spell it out for you? | know
you have a thing for me, but this kind of feeling is so fragile. Whenever Joan is in trouble, you rush to her aid
without a second thought, no matter how | feel, whether I'm heartbroken or upset, or even on the operating
table."
As she spoke, a sharp pain pierced her heart. But she managed to squeeze out a smile. "Attorney Horigan, | can't
fall for a guy like you."
Harvey took a few steps towards her. He gently held her, tried to kiss her, hoping it might salvage something. At
least, to remind her of their past love.
Eloise was stunned. In the midst of his heartfelt gesture, she stood rigid, her heart hurt to the point of numbness.
Summoning a strength from somewhere, she pushed him away. "Harvey, have sdecency, will you? If you
want a woman to sleep with, given your looks and status, you could have anyone you want. You don't need to
pester me."
Harvey's gazes were unreadable, "Do you think | just want to sleep with you?" Eloise's lips trembled as she
sneered, "What else? Marriage?"
Harvey's breathing grew ragged. He clenched his fist, taking a long tbefore finally saying tiredly, "Eloise, |
have no intention of getting married. It's not that I'm messing with you, it's just that marriage isn't in the cards
for me."
Eloise lowered her head.
She chuckled softly, "Don't worry, | have no plans to barge into your life."

She finished speaking and tried to close the door. But Harvey stopped her. His brows furrowed, "In my heart, you
mean more tothan Joan.”
Eloise looked up, staring at him in shock and fury. She laughed as if she'd heard the joke of the century,
repeating, "I mean more to you than Joan?"
Harvey's face grew serious.
Eloise's laughter faded, "Harvey. You claim | mean more to you than Joan, so I, the more important person, am
asking you to drop your partnership with her."
She asked mockingly, "Can you do it?"
Harvey frowned. He was a man who kept work and personal matters separate. He wouldn't tolerate a woman
meddling in his work.
He looked at her, "Can we negotiate another demand?"
Eloise bent down, picked up the supplements he brought and threw them out the door.
“I have another demand. Stay away from me. Harvey, never show up in front ofagain, we're finished."
Eloise closed the door. She leaned against it, as if she could still smell the tobacco scent from Harvey.
Once, she loved to nestle in his arms. She loved to press against his neck, feeling his breath through his skin, the
mix of tobacco and his masculine scent deeply intoxicating her.
But now, she just wanted to get away from him.
Veronica returned quickly, her face darkened. It seemed she had had a quarrel with Harvey downstairs.
Eloise regained her composure. She said, "Don't pick a fight with him on my account, Gunner and the Horigan
family always have sbusiness dealings."
Veronica put on a brave face. But in reality, she was suffering.
Eloise slowly opened the food box and softly said, "Don't worry, I'll bounce back." Even though it might be
painful. But it would pass.
A few days later, Eloise recovered and went back to work. Because of Max, she couldn't accept Judson's money
and apologized to Vanessa.
Vanessa was understanding. She patted Eloise and said, "If this one falls through, we'll find another. I've
arranged a dinner with sfriends in venture capital tonight, you should come."
Eloise was deeply grateful for Vanessa's generosity. After a brief chat, she called Amber and said, "Amber, I'm
sorry | can't work with Judson. But if Dylan wants to learn from me, I'll give her my all."
Amber had heard about everything from her husband, including Max and Harvey. She admired Eloise's skills and
originally thought she would be difficult to get along with. But she was surprised at how polite she was at this
moment, and how she didn't depend on men.
Amber suddenly took a liking to her. She thought Eloise seemed reliable. Even though Amber depended on her
husband, she still needed to have sof her own investments.
But Amber was also shrewd, she needed to see Harvey's attitude. Just in case Attorney Horigan wanted to invest,
she couldn't jump the gun.
Eight o'clock in the evening.
Eloise attended the dinner with Vanessa. Having just recovered from her illness, she wasn't really up for drinking.
But she had caused Vanessa a lot of trouble. How could she let Vanessa drink for two?
Eloise managed a smile and drank half a glass of red wine. The rich red wine went down her throat causing a bit
of discomfort, but she continued to smile.
"Good, Ms. Laurent can really hold her liquor."
"Ms. Laurent is so straightforward."
"Pour another for Ms. Laurent."

In the luxurious private room, under the crystal chandelier, the atmosphere was lively.
Eloise had almost a bottle of red wine. Her face was a little pale. Vanessa noticed it and quietly said to her, "Go
to the restroom, I'll find an excuse for you to leave early."
Eloise shook her head, "Let's leave together."
Vanessa sighed softly. She knew about Eloise and Harvey, and knew that as long as Eloise wanted, she could get
anything she wanted. But Eloise didn't want to be a mistress.
Apart from feeling a pity, Vanessa also admired her.
She was a pro at dinner parties, being able to create a vibe with just a few words, "Give Ms. Laurent a break, will
ya? This round's on me, Mr. Hughes."
And that Mr. Hughes, happened to be the president of a six-star hotel. He'd met Eloise before and knew she was
Harvey's girlfriend. When people in the private room asked Eloise to drink, he couldn't openly stop her. So he
sneakily shot a Facebook message to Harvey, asking what the heck was going on.
Eloise escaped to the restroom. Her stomach was churning, but she couldn't throw up. She turned on the cold
water and splashed her face a few times, which made her feel a bit better.
But in the end, she still got hammered.
In the restroom, she saw a tall figure and couldn't tell if it was real or a dream. So she just stared at him, her
eyes tinged with a touch of red.
Harvey cover and calmly washed his hands.
Eloise didn't speak. She just leaned against the cold tiled wall, watching him in her vulnerable state.
Harvey took his twashing his hands. They both stayed silent for a good while until Eloise finally realized he
was actually there, that they actually bumped into each other.
She didn't say a word and just turned to leave.
From behind her, Harvey softly said, "Eloise, is this the life you wanted?"
