Chapter 426 When she heard Rachel's voice, Willow fought down the clawing panic in her heart, and tried to sound casual as she said, "Hey, Rachel... I decided to head back home, after all. Won't be staying the night at your place so don't panic if you wake up and don't findthere." Willow stole a peek at Jasper. His seething gaze was locked onto her. It felt like a blade pressed against her throat. She was terrified, her heart reverberating back and forth like a ping-pong ball. He looked like he wanted to roast her alive, on a spit over a blazing fire.

In her heart, Willow prayed fervently that Rachel would hear, through the thick fog of sleepiness, the hidden meaning in her words. If things fell through here... it could spell disaster for the both of them! In the cramped back seat of the car, it was difficult even to draw breath. Lives were at stake.

Willow could actually hear her own heartbeat, hammering madly against her chest like it was trying to break out. Jasper just kept on staring and staring at her, with those dark eyes like inescapable, all-consuming black holes... Strained all the way to the breaking point, just as Willow was about to snap, Rachel's voice issued from the phone once more: "Oh, goodness... I'd fallen fast asleep, myself. Why did you suddenly decide to go home, so late at night? Was there really something so urgent that you needed to attend to... or was I simply an awful host?" And all of a sudden, the skies were clear. Truly, friendship was a magical thing.

Good thing she'd been keeping Rachel up to date on all her misadventures with Jasper Hughes! She must have realized that this was yet another one of those moments, and had understood what Willow needed from her.

"It's not like that, honest! It's just that I realized how I wouldn't have anything proper to wear to work tomorrow- I'm even wearing sof your clothes right now-I hate rushing about early in the morning, so I figured it'd be better to just head htonight, after all." In for a penny, in for a pound. She'd keep up this act until the curtains cdown. "Alright, then. You'll always be welcback here anytime, you know?" "I know. I'll let you get back to sleep now. Bye, then." And then she ended the call immediately.

Her beautiful crystal eyes shone with triumph as she turned back to Jasper. "See? I was telling the truth." Before she could even finish saying these few words, Jasper grabbed her by the back of her head, and forcefully brought her eye-to-eye with him.

Willow's heart leapt, and her eyes flew wide with shock. Thinking that he meant to kiss her, she held her breath, preparing herself to be kissed savagely.

But then he stopped, a mere inch away from actually making contact with her face.

He raised a hand to brush away a few strands of hair upon her forehead. It was a presumptuous motion on his part... but also a gentle one.

In this moment, Willow was close enough to examine every lovely detail of Jasper's face: his taut cheeks, proud nose, thin lips... every exquisite pore upon his flawless skin...

And those soulful eyes! Those long, luscious lashes! He was so handsthat he made her heart do somersaults! His hot, heavy breaths buffeted her face. He was so sexy, so captivating, so overpowering... he threw her emotions into disarray. She kept still, not making a single move. She didn't even dare draw breath.

"You're not fully healed yet. Why did you wash your hair?" Jasper's tone was stern, admonishing. He was examining the bump upon her forehead, the size of a chicken egg, dark red in color now. Not fully scabbed over yet, it was a bad idea to get it wet.

With everything that had happened tonight, Willow's hair and forehead were also sodden with sweat. If any of her sweat got into the wound, it would definitely worsen her condition.

Willow's fear changed into confusion. Was Jasper concerned for her? "My head was itchy," she told him. "I just couldn't stand it any longer." Jasper looked at her coldly, and set her down upon the seat beside himself.

Next, he drew the privacy barrier back down. "Take us to the hospital," he commanded Tyson.

"But I'm fine, Mr. Hughes!" Willow protested. "The wound has already closed up! just need a few days' rest, and then I'll be right as rain!" Jasper shot her a look, sharp and cold. Willow's mouth snapped shut, and she said no more.

At the emergency ward of the

hospital, a doctor disinfected the hideous wound upon Willow's forehead, then told her, "Soon, this Ӧ will be all scabbed up, and there'll be no further need to cover it up with bandages. Still, I'd like you to exercise more care from now on. If the wound gets wet, it could get infected, and that would certainly complicate matters!" Willow nodded as the doctor nagged on. "Yes, doctor. I understand. Alright, alright..."

Jasper led the way out of the hospital. His towering frseemed cold and distant, somehow. He was walking so quickly...
