"Lucy..." Cherise gently clasped Lucy's hand, uncertain how to soothe her in that fragile moment. Cherise wasn't Lucy; she was

"Lucy..." Cherise paused. She flattened her lips before continuing cautiously, "You shouldn't disregard your past efforts and
feelings. Even if it was a mistake, Lennon hasn'tpletely erased the past, has he? He vowed not to cause trouble to Colin in the
future, didn't he?"
Lucy stayed quiet, and her lips pressed together tightly. Her slender arm reached for another bottle of potent liquor, drinking from
it hastily, causing tears and snot to stream down her face. Supporting her head on her hand, Lucy turned to Cherise, slightly dazed.
"Do you know why he promisednot to bother Colin?" With a bitter smile, she rolled up her right sleeve, exposing a series of
unsightly scars on her pale, slender arm.
Cherise was startled, swiftly pulling Lucy's sleeve down and lowering her voice. "Didn't Jacob introduce you to a talented plastic
surgeon?"
"I've seen the doctor," Lucy chuckled bitterly. "Violet anticipated it, so she laced the whip with something before using it on me. It
seeped into the scars, and they can't be removed unless the flesh under these scars is cut away and allowed to heal anew."
Cherise's eyes widened in horror. "Violet is truly evil!"
"Yes," Lucy smiled wryly. "I've never opted for the surgery, not because | fear the pain, but because there are too many scars all
over my body. If | must wait for my flesh to heal after being cut away, | might end up spending months in the hospital."
"Despite studying medicine, | didn't want to endure such a lengthy hospitalization, so | never went through with it," Lucy said,

remindof how naive the old Lucy was. To endure such treatment from that man's family and still be so loyal to him." With that,
she reached for the bottle and resumed drinking.
This time, Cherise chose not to interfere. Quietly, she called Otto and told him to wait outside the bar.
At ten o'clock that evening, Mandy rushed out of the airport. She dialed Cherise's number for the fifth time, only to be met with the
dial tone. Lucy didn't answer her phone either, and Damien was equally unresponsive. "D*mn it! What's going on?"
The woman in the red trench coat rolled her eyes, swiping through her phone with frustration. She couldn't find anyone in Yatesville
who could assist her. "If only | hadn't kept my plans under wraps. | should've just let them know | wasing; then, | wouldn't be
in such an awkward position."
