Chapter 294 Charlotte handed Vera's résumé to the department supervisor, briefly explaining the situation.
The supervisor flipped through the pages, then glanced at Charlotte with a smile. "Dr. Sterling, with your reputation, if you want to recommend a friend for a position, do you really need my approval?" Charlotte replied evenly, "We still have to follow the process. Otherwise, it wouldn't be proper." The supervisor looked at her with newfound respect. After a more careful review of the résumé, she said, "This Vera Lee has an impressive background. She's even trained in computer programming-now that's a real asset. It's hard to find staff like that these days. A nurse who can handle IT? She's worth her weight in gold. Next tour computers crash, we'll have someone on the inside who can fix it." Charlotte just smiled, saying nothing.
The supervisor signed the paperwork. "Have her cin for the interview and assessment tomorrow." "Thank you, Director Sinclair." "Oh, don't be so formal. I'm sure I'll be relying on you for help myself one of these days, Dr. Sterling!" As Charlotte stepped into the hallway, she replied over her shoulder, "Anytime." She headed back to her office, still a little surprised at how easily things had gone. As she passed Judd's office, the door swung open and he stepped out.
Their eyes met. Charlotte simply nodded politely and started to walk past 1/3 14:17 Chapter 294 him.

She paused and turned, puzzled. "Is there something you need, Professor Carstairs?" "About earlier today-I spoke out of line at lunch. I'm sorry." Charlotte was taken aback.
He's apologizing for that? "It's fine. Honestly, I was the one making things difficult." "No, you weren't. It was I who-" "Professor Carstairs! Oh, Dr. Sterling, you're here too?" Gentry appeared, balancing several cups of coffee. Interrupting at just the wrong moment, he handed one to Charlotte. "Good thing I bought an extra-this one's for you." Charlotte hesitated, then took it. "Thank you." Judd frowned. "You have the worst timing." "What? I went out of my way to get you guys something nice, and now I'm being criticized for my timing?" Judd let out a short laugh and closed his office door behind him.
Gentry watched him, baffled. "What's his problem? Acting like he's got PMS or something." He turned to Charlotte for answers.
Charlotte just shook her head, indicating she had no idea.
Outside, dusk settled, and night drew in.
When Charlotte returned to her apartment, she found Evander sitting in the living room, legs crossed, looking completely at ease. Vera sat across from him, stiff as a board.
As soon as Charlotte walked in, Vera's eyes lit up with relief.

"Your friend comes all the way to Riverspire and you don't even tell me?" "It's just a small matter. I didn't want to trouble you, Mr. Howard."
Evander's smile faltered for a second.
He uncrossed his legs and shifted into a more relaxed pose. "It's not trouble at all. Actually, there's a vacant apartment in this building-l could rent it out to her for now. As for rent, whatever she can afford is fine." Vera hesitated but looked to Charlotte for guidance.
Charlotte hesitated too. "She's fine staying with me. I have a guest room, and besides, she doesn't have a job yet." Evander gave a mild smile. "I can waive the rent for the first three months." That offer almost made Vera reconsider.
"Evander!" Charlotte drew a deep breath. "What exactly are you trying to do here?" He didn't answer.
Vera stood up slowly and edged over to Charlotte's side, whispering, “Don't be upset, Charlotte. Maybe I should just do what Mr. Howard suggests. I don't want to cause any trouble..." Charlotte could see how uncomfortable Vera was-Evander must've pressured her before she got home.
But there was no way she'd let Vera be alone with him.
"You're staying here," Charlotte said firmly, stepping protectively in front of her friend. "Evander, if Vera leaves, then so do I." 3/3
