Regret 28 Chapter 28 Evander eased himself into the visitor's chair, crossing his long legs. He cut a striking figure-tall, broad- shouldered, effortlessly elegant in any suit he wore. His looks were the stuff of college legend, the kind that turned heads and made people whisper, all chiseled features and movie-star charm.

He'd been the campus heartthrob back in college, the man every girl swooned over. Yet, for three years, he'd quietly showered her with affection in private, nearly bringing her to the altar.

Whenever Tricia thought about it, a wave of resentment twisted in her chest.

And bitter regret, too.

"So, what exactly happened at that dinner?" She stiffened; of all things, he wanted to talk about that? Carefully, she forced tears to her eyes. "It was my fault.

I mixed up the private room numbers, and that's why Dr. Sterling ended up in danger. No matter how she treats me, I deserve it." Evander's expression grew hard to read, and he didn't reply.

The longer he stayed silent, the more unsettled Tricia became.

"Evander, do you not believe me?" "That's not it." He paused for a few seconds. "Don't overthink things." His answer made Tricia exhale quietly in relief. She leaned toward him, trying to nestle close. "Evander, about what happened..." But he stood up just then. "I'll handle it." She was left off-balance, nearly sliding off the bed when he moved away.

It was painfully obvious: ever since she'd cback from abroad, 1/3 Evander had been generous and accommodating, but his attitude wasn't what it used to be.

Of course not-he must think she was tainted now.

Tricia tried to swallow the bitterness.

If it weren't for the fact that she'd had a child with another man, would Evander be keeping his distance like this? Meanwhile, Charlotte stepped out of the security office, her brow furrowed.

Tricia had clearly planned everything in advance, and the surveillance camera on the stairwell had conveniently failed during the incident. She must have tampered with it.

After hesitating a moment, Charlotte pulled up a certain Whatchat and sent off a quick message.

For two days, Evander didn't return to Tranquility Manor.

His absence, honestly, was a relief.

While tidying up the walk-in closet, Lana noticed a lot of Charlotte's clothes were missing. As Charlotte was heading out, Lana asked, "Ma'am, you didn't get rid of all your clothes, did you?" She'd already noticed a few of her own things had disappeared lately.

Now, with so many dresses gone, it was hard not to be suspicious.

Charlotte just smiled. "Old clothes. Didn't fit anymore, so I donated them." "Of course, the seasons are changing. Maybe it's tMr. Howard bought you snew things." Lana's grin widened at the mention of Evander, almost giddy, as if she were shipping her favorite fictional couple.

Just then, her phone rang.

It was Xavier.

She answered, but before she could say a word, Xavier's furious voice blasted through the line "Charlotte, what the hell are you doing? Why did are Evander pull Hiram's defense attorney? Are you really so determined to see Hiram in prison?"

The words stopped Charlotte cold. Evander's warning-"You'd better look after yourself" flashed through her mind, and she bit her lip.

Xavier barreled on, "I don't care who Evander's seeing out there You're his wife, so it's your job to keep him in line. Don't be ungrateful!" He hung up before Charlotte could object.

She gripped her phone, trembling, and forced herself to take a deep breath before dialing Evander's number.

He answered soon enough—but it wasn't his voice.

"Dr. Sterling? How did you get Evander's number?" otte's eyes darkened. It no longer surprised her to hear that Tricia s with him.

"Letspeak to Mr. Howard. I need to talk to him." "But... Evander's still asleep. If it's important, maybe you can tell me?" "I'll wait until you have the right to speak for him." Charlotte didn't bother to hide her disdain, and hung up.
