Regret 214 "I heard that before the police even found my brother, he'd already managed to escape. There was a girl with him too, but I'm not sure if it was Charlotte," Genevieve said, shrugging. "After all, my brother cback with a high fever and was delirious for days because of the whole kidnapping thing. When he finally woke up, he couldn't remember anything about it, and my grandmother made sure no one ever brought it up again." Tricia's face darkened as she listened.

With the Howards being such an influential family, the old woman already looked down on her-so how could she ever accept Charlotte? So that's what happened.

Evander forgot about being kidnapped, forgot about the person who saved him...

For Charlotte, that was actually a blessing.

The next morning, the doctor arrived right on tto change Evander's bandages.

Charlotte was just about to head out when Evander grabbed her wrist. "You do it." She glanced at the doctor, who smiled and stepped back. "Mrs. Howard, I hear you're a doctor yourself. I trust you." Lana walked the doctor out, and soon enough, it was just the two of them alone in the bedroom.

Evander narrowed his eyes. "What's wrong? You can stabbut can't handle changing a bandage?" Charlotte bit her lip, steeling herself. She knelt in front of him, reaching for ointment and fresh gauze from the medical kit. "I'm not exactly gentle. Brace yourself" Evander watched her every move, the corners of his mouth twitching with a hint of a smile. “I handled it just fine when you stabbed me. This is nothing." "If you hadn't pushed her away, you wouldn't have gotten stabbed in the first place. This was your own doing." His smile faded a little. "Planning to spend the rest of your life behind bars?" "Wouldn't be the worst thing," she said flatly.

What did it matter? As if there was any future left for her with this family.

She had answered him, but Evander still felt unsettled, a strange restlessness creeping in. It was as if she could vanish at any moment.

The thought made his heart beat faster.

"What's with the red circles on your calendar?" he asked suddenly.

Her hands stilled as she tied the bandage. She looked up at him-he was leaning down now, his lips warm and damp as they brushed across her forehead.

His throat bobbed as he swallowed, something restless stirring inside him.

After a moment's pause, Charlotte stood. "It's the day to pick up the new car. What, you're keeping tabs on that now?" She kept her voice low, almost teasing, and to him, it sounded like a gentle rebuke.

Evander just smiled, saying nothing.

"The bandage is changed. I'll head out now."

Charlotte was just about to leave when Evander pulled her into his arms. She instinctively tried to resist, ve but as if he'd anticipated it, he only held her tighter. “Charlotte, I meant what I said before. Let's try to make this work." Charlotte went still in his embrace, her face expressionless.

After everything that had happened, now he wanted them to start over.

How laughable.

When she didn't reply, Evander turned her to face him. Somewhere along Somewhere the line, the spark in her beautiful, spirited face had faded; she hadn't smiled for him in so long. She used to be vibrant, full of color-the brightest thing in his world.

Now, she was like a beautiful puppet, all the light gone from her eyes, just an empty shell.

Evander understood-she couldn't accept her mother's death, couldn't process such a huge loss. But he would stay by her side, help her through it.

Gently, Evander cupped her chin.

He'd meant to kiss her lips, but feeling her stiffness, he stopped pressing jackiss to her brow instead. "Once I'm out of the hospital in a few days, let's go away. How about a trip to Lake Zurich? Didn't you always want to see Switzerland?" Chapter 215
