Regret 188 "Well, I suppose I owe you sthanks, then." Charlotte smiled. "If it hadn't been for Director Winthrop pulling sstrings, I wouldn't be here at all." Tricia feigned ignorance. "What do you mean by that, Dr. Sterling?" Charlotte stepped closer, stopping right in front of Tricia. She lowered her voice so only the two of them could hear. "I'm not pregnant. So there was never any miscarriage. Disappointed?" Tricia froze, her smile fading, lips going stiff as the truth sank in.

Before Tricia could muster a response, Charlotte turned to Jonathan. "Jonathan, I'll head back to my office now." He nodded, watching as Charlotte disappeared into the elevator.

Charlotte's right arm was still healing, so she wasn't cleared for surgery yet. The hospital director had rescheduled all her upcoming operations, assigning her only to pre-op consultations for now.

She'd already asked a colleague to check the security footage, but the cameras didn't cover the hallway. With people going in and out on both floors, finding out who pushed her was going to be nearly impossible.

Mrs. Rivers was officially being discharged and had specifically requested to see Charlotte. Winston arranged the appointment for his wife.

Charlotte made a special trip to the room. She knocked, waited for permission, then stepped inside.

Winston was packing up his wife's things in the corner.

"Dr. Sterling, you're here." Mrs. Rivers greeted her warmly, beckoning her to the bedside. “Thanks to your surgery, I feel so much better now." Charlotte offered a gentle smile. “I'm glad you're feeling well and haven't had any more discomfort.” "Dr. Sterling, have you ever considered transferring to another hospital?" The question caught Charlotte off guard. Before she could respond, Mrs. Rivers continued, "Riverspire District Hospital is a wonderful place. It's the best hospital in the city, and the benefits are just as good as at The Capital Medical Center." Charlotte pressed her lips together, thoughtful. She'd heard about that hospital back 1/3 15:10 hapter 188 in college.

District General was renowned for its specialists and cutting-edge facilities. They specialized in complicated, rare conditions-the kind of cases other hospitals couldn't handle. Patients who cto District General often found hope where they'd been told there was none.

But getting in was tough. Each year, they only hired 120 clinical fellows. Seventy percent of the application score was based on entrance exams, and they had especially high standards for evidence-based medicine and case analysis.

"With my background, I'm not sure I'd be a good fit for District General," Charlotte said quietly.

"Why not?" Mrs. Rivers looked genuinely surprised. "Even the doctors at District General couldn't confidently remove the tumor in my brain without risking nerve damage, but you did it." She reached out, taking Charlotte's hand. "I've spoken to Dean Chase. He toldyou graduated top of your class at the national medical school, and at eighteen, you performed a brainstem tumor resection during your internship. With credentials like that, you'd be a shoo-in at District General." Charlotte fell silent.

She had always wanted to work at District General.

The pay was excellent, the benefits top-notch-how could she not be tempted? For three years, she'd stayed at Metropolitan General Hospital for Evander's sake. Now that she was ready to move on, she deserved to choose something for herself.

"Maybe I'll have a conversation with Dean Chase, then," she said finally.

Mrs. Rivers's eyes lit up, and she called her husband over. "Winston, give Dr. Sterling your contact info. Once you've spoken with the director, Charlotte, be sure to reach out to me." Charlotte saved Winston's number, chatted a bit longer with Mrs. Rivers, then took her leave.

Winston finished packing, noticing how cheerful his wife seemed. He sat on the edge of the bed beside her. "You really like that young woman, don't you?"

Mrs. Rivers leaned her head on his shoulder. "Doesn't she remind you of someone? 2/3 15:10 Chapter 188 "Who?" Winston asked, puzzled.

"Laurinda," she said softly.
