Chapter 9
The doctor chuckled, assuming they were just an overly affectionate couple. "The baby has an equal chance of
resembling either parent. There's no way to guarantee which way it'll go."
"Is there anything that might increase the odds?" Alistair pressed.
"Not really," the doctor shook his head, then seemed to remember something.’ Eating fruits and drinking milk
might help."
Satisfied with this answer, Alistair's tense expression finally relaxed. He immediately pulled out his phone and
ordered everything the doctor had mentioned.
"I'll have the housekeeper prepare these for you every day," he told Vivian. "Make sure you eat them."
Vivian looked puzzled, not understanding why he was so obsessed with whether the baby would look like its

"Every single day? But Alistair, | can barely keep anything down as it is..."
His smile remained fixed, "For the baby, eat it."
Hearing them wrapping up with the doctor, Elaine quickly stepped back from the door. Moments later, it swung
open, and she found herself face-to-face with Vivian.
"Well, hello, Elaine," Vivian smirked. "Must be hard seeing how Alistair takes care of me."
The taunt hung in the air, but after what she'd just overheard, Elaine couldn't help but let out a small, bitter
laugh.
Vivian had expected jealousy, not laughter. She didn't realize how pathetic her situation truly was-Alistair wasn't
caring for her out of love but because he wanted a child who resembled his dead girlfriend.
"What's so funny?" Vivian snapped, her face flushing. Behind her, Alistair emerged from the room.
Seeing Elaine, he froze momentarily before his expression hardened. He grabbed her arm and pulled her away
from the door.
"Why are you harassing Vivian again?" he demanded in a low voice. "Once she delivers the baby, I'll send her
away."
His warning tone was nothing new, but Elaine no longer had the energy to defend herself. She just smiled.
Something about that smile made Alistair uneasy. Something was different, but he couldn't place what. "I
thought you were avoiding me. Why show up now? Just to antagonize Vivian?"
"I cto give you something," Elaine replied, starting to hold out the envelope. "This is our div-"
"Alistair! The baby's kicking!!" Vivian's excited voice instantly captured his full attention.
As he turned away, Elaine called after him. "This is important. Don't you want to see what it is?"
He hesitated for just a moment, but continued walking.

look just like her. Everything else is irrelevant."
She watched him go away. If she was insignificant, then so be it. Without saying another word, she went
downstairs to the parking lot, found his car, opened the door with fingerprint, and threw the divorce certificate
in.
Then she closed the door, walked away, didn't look back.
