Chapter 5

Kate almost jumped out of her skin with joy when she heard Elaine was already filing divorce papers. Now that

Alistair had barged in, she was ready to let him have it.

"Who's getting divorced? Well, obviously it's—"

"Just a friend of mine," Elaine cut in smoothly. "We were just talking about her situation."

Luckily, Alistair was so self-absorbed he'd never even consider that Elaine might want to leave him. He just

nodded.

Kate caught on immediately.

Sure, Alistair was a serial cheater, but he'd never want to lose his perfect little trophy wife. Where else would he

find someone who loved him so completely while putting up with his obsession with his dead ex? Someone who'd

patiently wait for him to notice her existence while handling all his dirty breakups?

She suddenly couldn't wait to see the expression on his face when he realized Elaine was actually gone.So she

played along.

The door had barely closed behind Kate when it swung open again. This tVivian waddled in, making a

beeline for Alistair and planting herself next to him.

"Why didn't you wait for me?" she pouted, rubbing her belly. "The baby totally misses his daddy."

Her bump was already showing at just three months. Alistair's eyes immediately softened as he leaned down

toward her stomach.

"Be good for mommy, little one," he murmured.

She lay there silently as a couple of nurses walked by, whispering loudly enough to be heard."God, what a

gorgeous couple. That baby will be beautiful!"

Alistair didn't bother correcting them.

"Alistair, it's tfor my medicine," she whined. "Could you get it forand graba hot cocoa by the way?

Pretty please?"

He actually nodded. The second he was out of earshot, Vivian's sugary facade dropped.

"Pathetic much? You're lying here with a head injury, and he's barely bothered to check on you." She smirked. "If

you'd just listened toand divorced him like | said, you could've kept sdignity. But no, you had to be

stubborn. So tell me, who's the desperate one?"

When she heard footsteps approaching, Vivian's expression instantly transformed from vicious to vulnerable.

"Sorry if I've upset you," she sniffled as Alistair entered. "I know you don't wanthere, but | just want to be

with Alistair..."

Elaine ignored the performance. Alistair handed Vivian the medicine cup without comment. "Take this."

Vivian's face twitched, but she recovered quickly. As she took the cup, her hand "accidentally" shook, dumping

the scalding liquid all over Elaine.

"Ah!" The burning pain spread across Elaine's skin.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" Vivian cried, fake tears already flowing. "It was an accident!"

Alistair's expression darkened, but not because his wife. Not once did he glance back at Elaine. His priority was

crystal clear Vivian's baby.

Watching them hurry away, Elaine barely registered the pain anymore.

After several more days recovering from both her injuries, Elaine was finally discharged. Alistair cto pick her

up.

When she mentioned needing to stop at the mall for sclothes, he surprised her by saying, "I'll cwith

you."

She knew he hated shopping with women, so his offer caught her off guard. What was he up to?

Once inside the shopping malls, he told her, "Go ahead and look around first," then made a beeline for the Baby

& Maternity Section.

The saleswoman, seeing them enter together, rushed over to Elaine with a bright smile.

"How far along are you, ma'am? What styles are you interested in? We have everything you might need!"

"Your husband is so attentive! He's checking every label, asking about materials..."

Elaine smiled thinly. "Yes, he'll make a wonderful father. But I'm not the mother."
